LOCATION:
By Road
Near the southern tip of the North Island, and just an hour's
drive north from Wellington along State Highway 2, Featherston is your
reward for braving the short but spectacular 'hill road' from Upper Hutt.
As you drive into the township, the broad flat valley stretches seaward -
inviting you to explore the unique wetlands and lush sheep and dairy country
on the road to the sensational South Wairarapa coast.
By Rail
The rail trip is relaxing and interesting. The last
part of the journey runs beside the lake, with lovely water views as well as
wild birdlife and farm scenes. The railway station is a very short walk
from the centre of town. It is easy to arrange a driver to meet your
train and escort you on a visit to the more out-of-the way and fascinating
parts of the Featherston region.
And Beyond
Beyond Featherston, SH2 runs up the Wairarapa to Hawkes Bay, the un-crowded
east coast, offering a practical route to all parts of the central North
Island.
